Ducks not in a row? Perfect!
Four months after making a final decision to leave corporate life, I was asked to speak to a group of 75 women about what I do as a Coach. The problem was, I had no idea what this business would be. I had coaching and consulting businesses before but was starting from scratch on this venture. (I was aligning more with my deeper purpose this time and finally had the coaching, training, and community I needed, to really make it happen.)
I saw a general vision but absolutely no details. I had no “title”, business cards, talking points, materials, website, program… nothing… not even a snappy tagline or elevator pitch to let people know who I am and what I do – let alone make it clear how I could help them specifically. Clearly the woman who invited me was out of her mind ;-).
This is what I knew for sure… my dream was ready to give birth. I just had no inkling whether it would be a boy, girl, or even human. By the time I finally got over myself, it felt a lot like my purpose was pulling me and would happen no matter what. I needed to get on board… and fast! There was a deep sense of being led.
The moment this wonderful woman asked me to speak, I felt two emotions simultaneously – terror and excitement. Welcome to following your dreams! The excitement told me I must do it. The terror told me I must do it. I didn’t hesitate. In that very moment, I said YES. She had given me no specifics… yet… I was all in.
Why? I’ve made the mistake of endless analyzing, thinking, and preparing. You know… the corporate way – overly logical and cautious. Along that path, I accumulated countless regrets. I look back now and see how that approach cost me – big time. I also knew from studying successful, happy people that one of the most common traits is their ability to take powerful action, spot good opportunities, trust themselves, and move quickly. My way of doing it in the past didn’t work very well so I decided to try something new this time, and I’m so glad I did.
I did not wait to have my ducks in a row. Had I done that, I never would have stepped up and out into my vision because the thing is, you simply cannot “prepare” to live an inspired life. You also can’t possibly anticipate all that could happen nor do you want to. Not only is it a waste of your precious time but your ideas are usually far smaller than what is really in store for you and you can’t really know what’s possible until you begin.
I had about 3 weeks to prepare. Seriously, that was crazy. It was also one of the best things that could have happened to me. Like I said, I had no website, materials, program, talk outline… nothing. I had a Coach – thank the heavens above, who helped keep me off the ledge, so to speak ;).
I jumped in with everything I had. That act alone (no matter the outcome) proved something I needed to see in myself:
You are really committed to this.
You are really doing this.
“This” was the pursuit of the life I’ve always dreamed of – helping to free women from the inside… out.
I had never spoken on the topic: “Building Your Business With Heart, Mind and Soul” but I sure knew what business looked like without it. In the corporate world, I had been there, done that. In my personal life, I had experienced what ignoring your heart and soul looks like. It isn’t pretty. In fact, that’s why I was launching something new – something that aligned every part of me.
I pulled from everything within me and trusted it was enough.
We had a great turn out, and I received loads of positive feedback. It was exactly what that group needed.
The woman who asked me to do this talk trusted her instincts, as all successful entrepreneurs do. She also inspired me to trust myself. Because both of us were in a state of trust – we were able to meet the needs of her community in a lasting way. This is doing business through higher consciousness.
Are you someone who hesitates to take action without seeing everything laid out in detail first?
Do you use your need to prepare as an excuse not to change your life or take action in general?
When was the last time you took a leap without knowing the outcome first?
Here’s how it can show up and what to do about it:
1) “I’m not sure.” Or, “I’m not ready.”
This is coming from a sense of scarcity or the belief you are not enough. We’ve been trained as a culture not to trust our intuition and inner guidance. We have also been taught to ignore our knowing about what to do with our lives to conform to social norms.
TIP: Even if you don’t feel ready, trust yourself and commit to do it anyway. Know that you will do what it takes, and give it your best every step the way. You can always change course but you must begin somewhere. Just take the first step.
2) “I don’t want to do it.”
This is where we find ourselves procrastinating. It usually means you are in fear or not being honest with yourself about something. This can be a tricky one so work it through with a coach. Often, this is used as an excuse not to grow because you aren’t sure you are ready for the growth. “Can I handle it?”
TIP: Trust your gut about what “it” is. If you know you want to do it deep down… if you trust it will get you where you want to go… then commit to do it. Step out in faith and see what happens. It will grow trust in yourself, and improve your ability to live an empowered life.
3) “I’m frustrated and feel stuck.”
What do you need? Are you actively seeking out what you need? Are you going inward to explore if this is a pattern that has held you back before? Are you trying to over-control? Are you doing the work that you need to do to get moving?
Tip: Breathe. Let go. Take action. Move through your frustration. Don’t let it stop you. Dial in and see what this is really all about (e.g. fear, resistance, need to re-direct), and commit to getting unstuck.
Can you relate to this? I’d *love* to hear from you below.
