I cannot live without trying
The other night I was reading through old journals that documented my decade long quest to find my true life’s work – the thing that would set my heart and soul on fire and I stumbled on my high school yearbook! (I haven’t looked at that in at least 20 years.) I was the Copy Editor of the yearbook my senior year in high school (actual pic to the left – no making fun of the hair people). That is when a teacher put me in a leadership position and gave me my first taste of what it feels like to have a sense of purpose. That experience pulled me into the light at a time in my life when it was quite dark.
In that position, I learned how to lead. I learned I had something to give. I learned I could help others find what they love to do. For the first time, I felt my life was meaningful. That taste gave me a thirst to pursue that feeling again and when I found myself off track after college I felt the stark contrast between how it feels to do what you are designed to do versus how it feels when you are not.
During my “very successful” career I felt persistently unsettled and began a 10-year pursuit to find that experience again of feeling ALIVE in my work because I knew I could not live without trying. I also knew I definitely wasn’t helping this beautiful world or anyone around me by being miserable. (Even when I was happy (and I was at times for sure), I had a dull ache inside. Can you relate?)
I read every book I could get my hands on about finding your passion/purpose and as I took one step after another, I got closer and closer. Did it need to take so long? Definitely not but I do not have any regrets about those years because I learned SO much. I grew professionally inside of those companies. Incredible people mentored me. I learned how to work on a team. I learned how to lead. I learned how to maintain high standards, discipline and work ethic. All of that created the foundation for where I am today, living my SoulFUEL™, doing work that matters to me, through this business.
When was the last time you felt on purpose?
When you did work that mattered to you?
When you lost track of time because you were so engrossed and IN LOVE with the task at hand.
When you knew with certainty that everything you experienced in your life led you to this very moment where you flowed naturally and brilliantly.
You may have to go back to your high school days to remember the feeling of doing something you loved, or perhaps it was more recent. Either way, you are worthy of the inquiry – the curiosity to discover what you are here to do and reconnect to who you really are, even if you feel it’s too late. Even if you have no clue what it might be. Even if you are plagued with self doubt, and feel terrified.
It is never too late.
One of my clients is in her 60s. She recently enrolled her first client doing something that is right ON purpose for her. When she first came to me, she was massively confused about what she could do that would fire her up and make her money from anywhere in the world. Now she has clarity. Now when she talks about her work, she lights up and is growing her work from that inspired place.
She couldn’t live without trying.
Another one of my clients is only 26. When she first came to me, all she knew was something was calling her (yelling at her actually!) but she did not know what that was exactly. She had only known herself professionally in her role as a manager at one of the largest retail stores in the country but she felt she HAD to follow the call in her heart to figure it out. She knew she couldn’t live without at least trying. Now, she is working with her first three clients doing what feels so incredibly natural to her, and building her purpose-passion-freedom-based-business.
It does not matter what your status is in life.
It does not matter how old you are.
It does not matter what certification you do or do not have.
You DO have something very special to offer and YOU are worth figuring out exactly what THAT is. Please, don’t allow anything to get in the way of that pursuit. It is worth every single bit of your effort and heart.
I know if I never tried, I would have never known it really is possible.
It IS possible to live a life you love making the difference you are here to make.
It took me ten very long years and it doesn’t have to take you that long.
Feel free to post a comment below and share where your heart is leading you. I’d love to cheer you on!
